About this converter

Storage vendors count in powers of ten (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) while operating systems and RAM often count in powers of two (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). That gap is why a “500 GB” drive appears smaller in Windows. Both families are listed here with their proper names.
