Rates are downloaded live from public feeds and cached on your device so the converter keeps working briefly offline. They are mid-market indicative rates: the rate you get from a bank, card or transfer service will be different because of spreads and fees. For the roughly 30 currencies the European Central Bank publishes, including the rupee, euro, pound and yen, the converter uses the ECB reference rate for the day; other currencies, such as the Gulf currencies, the Pakistani rupee and the Bangladeshi taka, come from Exchange Rate API, with a community feed as a backup if that source is down. Every rate is stored against the US dollar, so a pair such as INR to AED is calculated through USD. The line under the converter shows the date of the data and whether it was just downloaded, is a saved copy from the last few hours, or is an older offline copy. If no rates have ever been downloaded and you are offline, the converter says so instead of guessing.
Banks and card networks add a margin to the mid-market rate and sometimes a fixed fee, so the amount you receive is usually a little lower than this converter shows.
